whispers in the corridors
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s expected visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting sets the stage for a diplomatically sensitive convergence, as competing geopolitical currents intersect in the Indian capital.
The visit comes amid renewed global attention on Tehran, with Donald Trump’s parallel outreach to China reshaping the strategic calculus. Beijing’s emerging role as a mediator between Washington and Tehran adds another layer of complexity, particularly as Chinese representatives will also be present in New Delhi for the BRICS engagement.
For India, the optics and substance of this visit are equally delicate. New Delhi has carefully balanced its ties with Iran critical for connectivity projects like Chabahar while deepening strategic alignment with the United States and managing an increasingly competitive relationship with China.
The BRICS platform, traditionally positioned as a counterweight to Western blocs, now risks becoming a theatre for overlapping negotiations and quiet signaling among rivals.
Against this backdrop, Araghchi’s interactions in New Delhi could extend beyond multilateral talking points, potentially serving as a channel for indirect messaging amid shifting alignments involving Washington, Beijing, and Tehran.
